Reno: week 1
On Monday morning, renovations began at Casa Basel. Our construction and renovation project manager stated that things will take approximately 6 weeks, so the countdown is on!
Furniture was moved to the middle of the Salle, while the "big ticket" renovation of the ensuite bathrooms are the first to be remodeled. In general, bathrooms and kitchens are the most expensive part of a renovation (at least, so says HGTV!), and will take the most time to complete. As parts of the original floor tiles need to be removed as well, it makes sense starting from the inner most rooms and moving outward.
Already there have been some hiccups - we learned that (one of the reasons we're doing such a major reno) the massive water damage and high water bills is due to someone nailing straight through one of the water pipes! No wonder there was a leak... Additionally, our original plan was to remove the second-floor concrete rail and replace it with a wrought iron matching the design on the doors and windows but if we did that, there would be nowhere for the water runoff from the second landing to go; it was a form of an eavesdrough! Sadly, the concrete base will stay as there are electrical (!!!) wires running through.
These won't stop us, just a few things that require different plans. But that is what makes a reno so exciting!
